📆 Need More Time to File? Here’s How to File a Tax Extension

If you need extra time to file your individual income tax return, you’re not alone—and the IRS offers an automatic 6-month extension to file, as long as you take action by the deadline.

⚠️ This extension is only for filing—not for paying.

📝 Federal Tax Extension – IRS

Who Can File?
Any individual taxpayer can request a 6-month extension to file their federal return—no reason needed.

📌 How to File
Step 1: Submit Form 4868 – “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return”

You can file this form:

Electronically via IRS Free File:

👉 File an Extension through IRS Free File

📄 Or mail a paper Form 4868 if needed:

👉 Download IRS Form 4868 (PDF)

Deadline to File Form 4868:

  • 📅 April 15, 2025 (for most individuals)

  • 🌍 June 15, 2025 if you’re living outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico

💵 Extension to File ≠ Extension to Pay
Even if you file for an extension, you must estimate and pay any tax owed by April 15 to avoid interest and late payment penalties.

Payment options:

  • 👉 IRS Direct Pay

  • EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)

  • Credit/debit card through IRS-approved payment providers

  • Mailing a check with Form 4868 (if filing on paper)
