How to Obtain or Retrieve your IRS Identity Protection PIN

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number issued by the IRS to help protect your tax return from identity theft. If you're eligible or have previously been issued an IP PIN, here's how you can get or recover it.

✅ What Is an IP PIN?

An IP PIN is a special six-digit number assigned by the IRS to eligible taxpayers.
It helps prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return using your Social Security Number (SSN) without your authorization.

  • Your IP PIN must be included on your tax return for it to be accepted.

  • You’ll receive a new IP PIN every calendar year.

🔐 How to Get an IP PIN Online (Fastest Option)

  1. Go to the IRS official Get an IP PIN page.

  2. Click “Get an IP PIN.”

  3. Sign in to your IRS account.

    • If you don’t have an IRS account, click “Create an account.”

    • You’ll be asked to verify your identity through:

      • Personal info (SSN, address, etc.)

      • Financial account (like a credit card or loan)

      • Or your mobile phone provider

  4. Once verified and logged in, follow the prompts.
Your IP PIN will be displayed immediately and is valid for that year.
