How to Obtain or Retrieve your Dependents IRS Identity Protection PIN

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number issued by the IRS to help protect your tax return from identity theft. If you're eligible or have previously been issued an IP PIN, here's how you can get or recover it.

How to Request a Reissued IRS IP PIN for your dependent (Step-by-Step)​​

  • Gather verification documents before you call

    • Have the most recently filed tax return and/or wage data for the person calling available.

    • The IRS will use this information to verify identity.

  • Call the IRS

    • Dial 1-800-908-4490.

  • Choose your language

    • Follow the prompts to select your language preference.

  • Navigate the phone menu

    • Select Option 4 for “Another identity theft topic.”

  • Wait for an agent

    • Either stay on hold or use the call-back option (if offered).

  • Complete identity verification with the agent

    • Once connected, the IRS agent will ask security questions.

    • Be ready to verify dependent information, including:

      • Dependent name

      • Date of birth (DOB)

      • Social Security number (SSN)

  • Receive the reissued IP PIN by mail

    • After verification, the IRS can reissue the IP PIN by mail.

    • Expect up to 21 days to receive the letter.

    • Important: The IRS will not provide the IP PIN over the phone.​
